Sick Girls

When we got back from Oklahoma to visit family, Teagan, Boston and I all came down with the flu. It was pretty bad. Both of the girls are thumb suckers, so that was a problem when they wanted to sleep and they were too plugged up to breathe through their noses. We had a couple nights of no sleep in order to get the girls through.

Let me first say that it SUCKS to be sick and not be able to take a day and just sleep through it. You don't get to be sick as a mom, I have figured out. Poor M, he had to deal with us 3 sick girls. He just couldn't do it all on his own. Twins are a lot of work when they're healthy. I can't even tell you how much work they are when they're sick. The worst part is that there is nothing you can give babies that are sick besides tylenol/motrin. It is torture for them and for us. I'm REALLY glad this is over.

Here's a little video of the girls after their "nap," one afternoon while sick when M was at work. I shot it with my phone, so sorry about the quality. You'll have to get through the beginning of the video that's all black where you can hear Teagan crying (which she had been doing for about an hour). She has sick eyes and much leakage. Boston was looking pretty good on this afternoon but she actually got it worse than Teagan. This was before I completely lost my voice a few days later:

As you can see, naps are essential to my girls' good behavior. Without 2 successful naps, we've got problems in the Moreno house. Thank God they're generally very good about sticking to their schedule...when they're sick, not so much.

I'm so happy to say that we're back to normal in the house! Whew! It was touch and go there for a bit and there was a moment there where I just cried out of sheer frustration and sickness. Being sick sucks.

That's all I got for now.

Dear Babies: Month 11

Well, the girls and I were very sick with the flu on the 11th month of their birth. We did set them up next to their bear and take some pictures, but I didn't push them too hard to smile. I'm just glad they didn't scream during this process. We were all working on very little sleep during these photos. Well, let's get to it, shall we? Here they are in all their 11-month glory:

Boston on the left and Teagan on the right. They had their Eskimo Joe's shirts on from their trip to Oklahoma the weekend before. They're starting to dwarf that bear, huh?

Dear Teagan,

Here is your 11-month picture:

I see you now and know that you are becoming very grown up! You are weighing in at just around the 19 pound mark. You are now fully into your 12-month sized clothing. I can also see that you're getting a little more hair. It is really starting to accumulate in the back but both you and your sissy are little baldies on top. I'm still waiting for the day that I can put your hair in one of the bows I made you!

This month has been your most active yet. You never seem to settle down much. You and your sister have become very aware of each other and play together all day. I love it. You clap at each other, kiss each other, touch each other's faces, hold hands, watch tv together, play peek-a-boo with each other, babble with each other, laugh at each other and sometimes you fight with each other. Even with the fighting and taking each other's toys, I could not be happier to see you both in action. You don't like to be apart and I see that you guys keep one eye out for what the other is doing at all times. I'm sure this bond will just get stronger every day that you grow up. I can already see how much you love Boston.

This month we took a family trip to Oklahoma to visit family there (your great grandma, great aunt, great uncle, 2nd cousins, Uncle David and Uncle Aaron are there). You had so much fun with family. They just loved on you so much and you did so good on the trip (even with the long car rides and the interrupted schedules). It was a lot of work to get everything packed up and get you out there, but I'm glad we did it. Just so you know, we checked 5 bags for you and Boston (2 pack-n-plays, 2 car seats and 1 suitcase) and 1 bag for Daddy and me. Unfortunately, you, Boston and I all got the flu when we returned. It was your first time being sick. You guys really were good except for the fact that you couldn't breathe through your nose and that makes sucking your thumb impossible. You both had 1 night of no sleep and 100% frustration. We kicked up the humidifier, angled your mattresses and kept you on a strict tylenol-motrin regimen to fight the fever. After 2 weeks of sickness, we're all almost completely back to normal. WHEW!

This month you are imitating everything. When I say "no" to you and shake my head, you shake your head back. You play peek-a-boo now but instead of putting your hands over your eyes, you put them over your ears (PRICELESS). You pretend to talk on your fisher-price phone by putting it up to your ear and leaning your head over. You try to make all the motions that we do when we talk to you. It's amazing how much you can do. This month you have learned how to make sounds on purpose. When I say, "can you say mama," you can actually say mama. Same goes with "Dada" and "Sissy." You are just amazing.

As far as your movement is concerned. You're right on that cusp of walking. When we hold your hands you can fly across the room, but you get scared when we don't hold your hands and sit down instead of walking. I know it's coming soon. I can see the cogs inside your brain turning when you're standing in the middle of the room and we're telling you to come to us. It will be strange to see such small babies walking. You still seem so small to me compared to other babies your age.

We're all settled in here in Colorado and you are loving your nanny/babysitter, Stephanie. She has been such an amazing blessing to our family. She loves you guys so much and you love when she comes to play with you. I never imagined I would trust someone so much with you guys, but she is just the best! This month, she even started watching your friends Caroline and Sophia a little bit.

I love you so much Tee-Tee. You are so fun and full of personality already. I am so ready to see the kind of toddler and girl you will become. You've got spunk, little one!

Love,

Mommy

Dear Boston,

Here is your 11-month picture:

I see you now and know that you are becoming very grown up! You are weighing in at just around the 18 pound mark (still holding steady at 1 lb smaller than Teagan). You are now fully into your 12-month sized clothing. I can also see that you're getting a little more hair. Well, Bean, I just love you so much and I am amazed by you on a daily basis. I can't wait to see what you figure out next month!

Love,

Mommy

Experiencing Fall

I'm from Arizona.

I've missed the fall and Spring experience for the past 22 years of my life. There are no pumpkin patches, no apple picking, no leaves changing, no jackets, no snow...none of that. AZ simply changes from "Threat level RED heat" to "Threat level ORANGE" in the month of October/November and then back again in March/April. I can't believe how much I love Fall. Now that we're in Colorado, I've been trying to take in all things Fall and Winter. I am literally giddy when snow and rain grace my presence.

This last weekend, M's sister, Brittany, was here to visit and we headed out to Anderson Farms to pick a couple of pumpkins for the girls along with the Block family. What a cool experience. I can't wait to take Teagan and Boston back when they can really understand and take part in the activities. We actually got to go out to the field and pick our very own pumpkins and then took a tractor ride back to the main festivities.

Here we are in the middle of the field. It ended up being pretty hot and windy on this day, hence the unruly hair, but hey, you gotta document, right?

Here is Aunt B with the girls

Now I just need to find an apple orchard to go to around here. Bring on the Fall and Winter!

That's all I got for now.

Looking Like a Family

Sometimes it's hard to believe that I have a family of my own. As the girls get older and a little more interactive, I realize that I have 2 daughters. I am a mom. I have 2 kids. It's still strange and unfamiliar.

When I see pictures like this one, though, I know it's true.

I think we fit. We are a family.

That's all I got for now.

When Mom's Blog

My mom and I have been using Skype as a way for her and the girls to "hang out" during the week. For those of you who aren't familiar, Skype is a way to talk to people through webcam over the internet, for FREE! We've been chatting a couple times a week so she can see the girls' new tricks and interact with them a little bit. What an amazing piece of technology!

Here we are, skyping away. You can see the girls and I in the bottom corner. I'm pretty sure we're giving Ninny some technology lessons in this frame. She usually talks to them for a couple of minutes and then we commence with the lessons.

You see, my mom started a blog. I should preface this statement with a word about her technosavviness: SHE HAS NONE. So, as a result, I have spent hours (literally) walking her through the blogging process. Add to that the fact that she wants her blog to have all kinds of bells and whistles and we've got a little problem. I liken her ability to retain computer information to my ability to my ability to walk away from a chocolate chip cookie...it's not happening. I swear the things I tell her just don't stick. It must be a generational thing because she remembers all kinds of other crap (like that time I accidentally put a hole through the wall in high school with my foot or when I did all kinds of other embarrassing stuff...it's just not right).

This last time we had a 2-hour lesson, she made lots of notes, so let's hope that helps with the remembering process. Her blog is pretty good though and she's dang proud of the songs that are posted to correspond with each post. If you have some time, check it out.

That's all I got for now.

Things I Can't Live Without, Part 3

Time to update the baby must-haves as the girls are now older and the list has grown. Some of these must-haves were found by process of elimination. Hopefully this will save a few of my readers some time if you're looking for a product to meet your needs:
Kirkland Infant Formula with Iron

I started the girls out on Similac Advance and Organic formula when they started weaning. They did really well on it, but let me tell you how expensive that stuff is (plus they send you coupons until you start using them and get your baby hooked, then they totally stop...NOT COOL SIMILAC). I did a lot of research on formula and found that the Costco brand (Kirkland), is almost exactly the same as Similac Advance and almost half the price (and haven't had the problem with the rocket fuel, for you researching moms out there). So, at 9 months when the girls moved to formula feedings, we started on the Kirkland brand. It is just as good, the girls love it and we love the price!

Kirkland Premium Unscented Wipes

It has taken me until now to get our wipe situation worked out. The Kirkland wipes in the above box are AWESOME! Too bad they decided to change their wipes and now they're total crap. If you find a case of the original wipes, snatch them up. They're cheap and awesome. I have one box left that I don't want to waste.

The new wipes are supposed to be better for the environment but they aren't as soft, don't stay as wet and smell like gasoline. NO THANK YOU! Once they decided to go green, I quit using them. Environmentally friendly wipes suck!

I also tried the Sam's Club brand (Member's Mark) and I swear they gave the girls diaper rash. They're hard as rocks and although they don't smell like gasoline, they don't stay wet. I hate them.

Up&Up by Target Unscented Baby Wipes

Finally, on the recommendation of another twin mom, I tried the brand Up&Up by Target called Cushie Tushie. These are Awesome. They're really soft, cheaper than the Pampers brand and just as good. They work perfectly as a replacement for the Original Kirkland wipes.

Walk-Around Saucer

My girls have been using this thing since they were able to hold their head up and they still use it now. This one is an old-school hand-me-down that we got but I wish I had gotten two of the exersaucers that walk in a circle from the beginning for T & B.

Exersaucer

Although this one doesn't walk around, it does bounce and plays a wide variety of songs/sound effects. I like it and my girls have gotten their use out of it!

Leap Frog Learn and Groove Musical Table

My girls LOVE this thing. They can both play with it at the same time, it sings and talks and they are able to pull up and walk around it. I got it at a twin garage sale and it was the best $20 I've spent! Knowing how much they love it, I would have paid full price for it as well!

Aquaphor

The girls were battling a pretty nasty bout of diaper rash last week (their first time). I still change their diapers whenever they're wet or dirty, but both of them ended up with the same rash on the same day. It was uncomfortable for both of them. I tried Butt Paste and Desitin but neither knocked it out. I then tried Aquaphor (which isn't necessarily a baby product but I had a free sample) and it worked so well. I went and got 2 more tubs of it for the winter because it can be used on chapped lips and cheeks as well!

Sassy Look Book

I got one of these before we moved and put pictures of family and themselves in it and the girls love it. Sometimes they fight over it. It's a good cheap toy.

Happy Bellies Rice Cereal and Oatmeal

There are a lot of rice cereals and oatmeals out there on the market. Some organic, some not. Organic, bleach free is clearly the best nutritionally for the babies but many of them don't have a good consistency (globby, sticky, lumpy, yucky tasting). After trying almost all of them, I have decided that the price on the Happy Bellies Cereal and Oatmeal line is the best one. It is a good consistency, tastes good, is readily available and includes DHA and Probiotics (which is good for baby brains and immunity).

First Juice

I went through a lot of other juices before I settled on First Juice for the girls. This one doesn't have to be watered down to reduce sugar because it's already less than most, it has vegetabes in it, it tastes good, it's organic and the flavor combos are unique. The only bad thing about it is that it is expensive (about $4 for a 32 oz bottle). It's worth it for me though not to overload them with sugar and still get them used to drinking something other than milk.

Dye-Free Infant Tylenol

This stuff is great. It saved us during teething time. My girls love the taste. Worth every penny!

That's all I got for now.

Dear Babies: Month 10

Well, here we are again. Another month gone. They're starting to run together now and I'm having a hard time remembering who did what on which day, sometimes. 2 months away from their first birthday. Month 10 was a good one for me in the life of T & B!

Here is their 10-month picture:

Getting big, huh? The lighting in the picture is different this month because it's the first one taken in our new house which has a lot more natural light in the living room. They came out okay though. Let's get down to business!

Dear Teagan,

Here is your 10-month picture:

You just keep growing up. Somehow, I hoped you'd not do that, but it looks like you're going to go ahead and be like all the other little babies out there in the world and just keep getting bigger. This month you weigh 17.12 lbs. I remember thinking, "dang they're heavy" when you weighed 8 lbs and I wondered how I would be able to hold you all the time when you got bigger. Somehow my arms are just adjusting!

This month was a big month for our family. We made the move from Arizona to Colorado because Daddy got offered a new job in Fort Collins. It was so much work to pack and get everything from one place and set up in the next while trying to watch you and your sissy. I can't believe we made it! Our trip was not without a few snags along the way, but we made it and you guys did amazing. You transitioned without a major problem and have really not been affected by the altitude or drastic change in temperature. We couldn't have done it without the help of our friends and family who all pitched in to make the move as smooth as possible.

Speaking of a change in temperature, on the day we left Arizona, it was 106 degrees outside. Within the month here in Colorado, it actually snowed. Can you believe that? Your Daddy and I had to get you a new wardrobe so you wouldn't freeze your tooshies off in the cold weather. We got you new fleece and footie jammies, long sleeved onesies to go under your short-sleeved ones, a jacket and even a hat! You guys are set, until you grow into the next size, then we have to do it all over again!

Teagan, you now have 4 teeth! You've been a pro at the theething thing and it hasn't seemed to really annoy you, which is a blessing. You still have a couple teeth to come in before you catch up to Boston (she has 6 still), but I can see them pushing through.

I've seen a big change in the way you play this month, you're so much more mobile. You pull up and walk around everything. You guys have taken quite a few spills that make my heart jump out of my chest at times, but usually get up without it even phasing you. You can now clap, give hi 5's, push buttons to make them make noise, pound your hands on hard surfaces to make noise, jump, dance, sway head to music, tip your head and smile and wave "hi." You know the meaning of a lot more words this month, too. When I say jump, you actually do it. When I say "yay" or you hear clapping on the TV, you clap your hands. When I tell you I'm gonna "get your booty" you crawl away laughing or run away in your walking saucer (this is one of your favorite games we play). You've also learned how to communicate with us. When you want pretty much anything from your dad, you say "dada" and he runs to you with a gold platter and starts handing over anything you could imagine (okay, maybe this is a tiny exaggeration...it's a silver platter). When you're eating and you want another bite, you can sign "more" by putting your fingers together. I'm expecting a call any day to name you and your sister the two youngest Rhodes Scholars ever to be given the award!

One of the scariest things you do right now is stand on your own for a short period of time without holding on to anything. I'm really not ready for the walking phase and I know that's what comes next. Especially with all the stairs that we have in this house. It's hard enough to chase the two of you down when you crawl, I don't think I am going to be able to handle the walking. I can't believe we're even talking about you making this step. You just don't seem old enough yet.

You and Boston have really started to communicate with each other. You play together in your play room, you talk, laugh and scream at each other in your cribs and touch each other when you're eating. You are still taking your toys from one another and then crawling away to protect it, but so far you're getting along. You use a lot of the "da, ta, eeeee, nnnnnn" and spitting sounds when you're conversing with each other. It's quite cute to watch. You don't regularly use "mama," which is something we really need to work on! While we were at your grandma's house ready to go to the airport you reached out for her and said, "Nii-nnee." Not sure where that came from, but we're running with it. She's trying to change it to "Neenee," but I'm 100% positive that's not what you said and I am also 100% positive you or Boston get to name her! So from here on, we're calling her Ninny unless you change your mind!

Finally, this month we changed your schedule to work around your 2 naps so that you would nap for longer periods of time. We also start your day an hour later because of the time change from AZ to CO. Here's what we do every day:

8:00: Wake-up and 7oz bottle
8:30: Play downstairs
10:00 Eat Solids (Rice Cereal and fruit)
11:00 Nap #1
12:30 Wake up and 6 oz bottle
1:00 Play downstairs or walk outside
2:30 Eat Solids (Yogurt, Vegetable)
3:30 Nap #2
4:30 Wake up and 6 oz bottle
6:00 Eat Snack (foods you feed yourself like cheese, meat, puffs, yogurt meltaways)
7:00 Eat Solids (Meat, Vegetable & Fruit)
7:15 Bath
7:45 6 oz bottle
8:00 Bedtime

As you can see, we're eating a lot more frequently now, the solids are outweighing the bottles but your naps have gotten a lot longer as a result. I'm one happy mama when I get a 2-hour nap in the morning time. Soon you'll be drinking cow's milk and feeding yourself for every meal so even though it's a lot of work, I'm trying to enjoy the time!

I love you so much, Teagan. You make me proud every single day.

Love,

Mommy

Dear Boston,

Here is your 10-month picture:

What a little girl you have become this month, Boston. You are not only getting bigger, but you show me something new almost every day. This month you weigh 16.8lbs. You're still pretty tiny compared to other kids your age, but I'm pretty sure you don't know it. Your small stature doesn't hold you back at all, I don't think.

You have amazed me this month, Bean! I mean it. For your rocky start, you have emerged as quite a smart little cookie! You have started to show your sister that just because she's bigger, doesn't mean you can't do things first! You take Teagan's toys from her on a regular basis (which she doesn't love, by the way) and then you crawl away from her as fast as your hands and knees can carry you. I'm afraid Teagan might realize she's bigger than you soon and pound on you, so watch out! You are always the first to investigate something new. Teagan will wait for you to go check something out before venturing over to take a peek at it. You have no fear of new things, you just jump right into it like you've been doing it for years.

This month was a big month for our family. We made the move from Arizona to Colorado because Daddy got offered a new job in Fort Collins. It was so much work to pack and get everything from one place and set up in the next while trying to watch you and your sissy. I can't believe we made it! You guys are set, until you grow into the next size, then we have to do it all over again!

You've held steady at 6 teeth (4 upper and 2 lower) for the past 2 months. I'm so glad to give you a teething break and let your sissy catch up to you in that department. I'm also glad that you guys didn't go through the few really hard days together. Teething throws off sleep, schedules, and general happiness for a few days and it's difficult to adapt to when there's another baby to tend to!

I've seen a big change in the way you play this month, you're so much more mobile. You pull up and walk around everything. You guys have taken quite a few spills that make my heart jump out of my chest at times, but usually get up without it even phasing you. You got your first fat lip this month when you accidentally banged your mouth into the edge of a table at breakfast, but you only whined for a couple seconds and moved on to something else. You can now clap, give hi 5's, push buttons to make them make noise, pound your hands on hard surfaces to make noise, jump, dance, sway head to music, tip your head and smile, stand on your knees and wave "hi." You know the meaning of a lot more words this month, too. When I say jump, you actually do it. When I say "yay" or you hear clapping on the TV, you clap your hands. Soon you'll be drinking cow's milk and feeding yourself for every meal so even though it's a lot of work, I'm trying to enjoy the time!

I can't believe you're the same small baby that I begged to take home from the hospital. You are such a blessing in my life and I love you so much.

Love,

Mommy

That's all I got for now.
